Equipping the community with tools for a better tomorrow

Robotics Club

Speak Out Kansas and Wichita State University's Shocker Robotics have teamed up to expose students to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Through the department of engineering outreach, Wichita State student scholars are using a hands-on approach to teach SOK youth the first principals of STEM as it pertains to robotics. Many of the students participating in Speak Out Kanas Robotics club have not had hands-on experience with the sciences. As the program grows, SOK youth will have the opportunity to participate in area Robotics tournaments.

We meet weekly to build strong-minded young engineers.  We are working with VEX IQ robotic kits to compete in regional and state tournaments.

Nutrition Education

A healthy diet may not be able to cure chronic illness. It can, however, relieve some of the worst symptoms — and significantly improve quality of life. Speak Out Kansas teamed up with Sedgwick County Extension Office's, Shirley Lewis a registered dietitian and nutrition expert to teach SOK members and friends how a healthy diet can control or manage many illnesses  including hypertension, diabetes, heart disease among many others. During the nutrition classes, Shirley demonstrates healthy cooking techniques and shares recipes. A special bonus for those attending is that Shirley shares ample samples of the dishes she prepares for everyone to try. The response is usually that of surprise that cooking and eating healthy doesn't mean a compromise on taste. Various nutrition class options are offered with each lasting eight weeks, Shirley Lewis facilitates the classes at Speak Out Kansas twice annually.
